Swati Shah, M.D.
Serves OB/Gyn Needs of 9th Ward & Gentilly Women
In 2004, Dr. Swati Shah was officially honored as a member of the “Power Generation” as designated by New Orleans CityBusiness, the area’s only weekly business publication. Nominees had to be under forty years of age and have significant career accomplishments in their chosen fields, as well as to offer promise for the future of New Orleans. Offering promise and service to New Orleans & OPMS is what she does best.
Dr. Shah, an OB/Gyn with Crescent City Physicians, Inc., Touro Infirmary’s group practice, provides obstetrical and gynecological care to patients residing in the 9th ward and Gentilly areas of New Orleans. Prior to her setting up this practice, there were no OB/Gyns providing care in this area. Patients had to commute to see other physicians, or rely on neighborhood clinics for their care. As a part of her growing practice which she has now expanded to the Lakefront area, Dr. Shah also provides prenatal care to clients of Great Expectations, a non-profit agency, which cares for patients who are most needy.
Dr. Shah’s desire to serve many of the underserved in our community by making care more accessible represents her personal philosophy of life includes committing herself to doing things for other people and making a difference in her community. At an early age, encouraged by her parents, especially her father, Dr. Shah has established public service goals for herself personally and professionally. She attains a real sense of personal satisfaction from providing care to those who need it.
Dr. Shah attended Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, where she received a B.A. in Sociology in 1990; and attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA, graduating in 1995. She completed her residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1999, and she is presently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Health. She became Board Certified in OB-Gyn in January, 2003. She is a preceptor for Tulane’s Foundation in Medicine program for 1st year medical students, and an adjunct faculty member for Tulane University School of Medicine’s OB/Gyn Department.
Her activities with OPMS include serving as vice chair of OPMS’s Membership Committee and co-chair of the OPMS Subcommittee on Outreach to Women Physicians. She is a member of the Council of Governors as well. She was featured in the video documentary in celebration of the Orleans Parish Medical Society’s 125th birthday.
Dr. Shah is also active in a number of local civic organizations, including Dress for Success. In addition, she is an active member of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the Greater New Orleans Obstetrics & Gynecology Society, and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
As one can tell, she believes in being of service to her patients, community and organized medicine, and notes, “I believe in the power of organized medicine, if nothing else than to network and meet with other professional colleagues. As Vice-Chair of Membership, I look forward to strengthening the membership with the power of the younger and newer physicians in practice today, like myself. As the face of medicine changes and continues to evolve, it is my hope that OPMS can attract those new physicians in order to continue its growth at the cutting edge of organized medicine today.”
